Louisiana Holds Highest Combined Sales Tax Rate in the U.S. at 10.11%

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, retail sales taxes serve as a primary revenue source for most U.S. states, with only five states not levying a statewide version. Many cities and towns add local sales taxes on top of state rates, frequently directing these funds toward municipal services.

Louisiana possesses the highest combined state and local sales tax rate in the country. While its state-level rate of 5.0% ranks 32nd nationally, an average local sales tax rate of 5.11% brings the total combined rate to 10.11%. The state recently increased its sales tax rate from 4.45% to the current 5.0% level.

The national average for combined sales tax rates is 7.53%. Following Louisiana, states with some of the highest combined rates include Tennessee, Washington, Arkansas, and Alabama. Alaska has the lowest combined sales tax rate at 1.82%. Several states, including New Hampshire, Delaware, Oregon, and Montana, do not impose state and local sales taxes and are therefore absent from comparative rankings.
