Lomarlabs & Blaze Energy Pilot Multi-Fuel Reformer for Shipping

Lomarlabs has partnered with Blaze Energy to pilot a compact, engine-integrated Flex-Fuel Reformer aboard a Lomar vessel. The system aims to convert ammonia, methanol, or LNG into hydrogen blends onboard and validate multi-fuel operation under real sea conditions.

The installation is scheduled for early 2027 after land trials and class engagement. It will first be proven on ammonia and is designed as a capital-efficient step toward retrofit and newbuild deployments.

The reformer injects small quantities of hydrogen to accelerate combustion of slow-burning fuels, reduce ammonia slip, improve combustion efficiency, and mitigate methane slip in LNG engines. By enabling existing engines to run on blended fuels, the system seeks to preserve owners' operational flexibility and avoid premature lock-in to a single fuel pathway as EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime tighten compliance demands.

The energy transition in shipping will be non-linear and involve multi-fuel operation for longer than may be expected. Technologies that create optionality, rather than betting on a single outcome, will be strategically important.

This pilot marks a deliberate shift from proving technology to proving operability. Integrating the Flex-fuel System with a trading vessel addresses one of the key bottlenecks in adopting alternative fuels.
