LNG Shipping Index Nears Historic High as Market Dynamics Shift

The UP World LNG Shipping Index gained 2.08 points, or 1.20%, closing at 175.26 points on the week, according to UP-Indices. During the same period, the S&P 500 index lost 0.35%.

The index is less than a point away from its historic high of 176.15 points after rising for five consecutive weeks. This proximity has caused a slight slowdown in individual companies, and trading volume was only slightly above average. Frosty weather persists in Europe and Asia, with a spread between higher European and Asian gas prices continuing.

Spot charter rates continue to fall sharply, especially in the Atlantic basin. The closed arbitrage for shipping U.S. gas to Asia is directing those cargoes to Europe instead. The shorter transatlantic route means faster ship turnaround, which, combined with record fleet growth, is creating a surplus of available tonnage in the Atlantic.

Weekly Performance Leaders and Laggards

New Fortress Energy led gains with 22.54% growth, closing above the price range in which it had been trading since November. Excelerate Energy confirmed a previous breakout with 8.5% growth. Other increases were significantly smaller. Dynagas LNG Partners grew by 3.6%, and BP added 3.25%. Korea Line Corporation added 2.85%, and Golar LNG grew by 2.17%.

On the downside, Awilco LNG lost 4.48%, a decline to support within a sideways trading range. NYK Line fell 2.5%, standing as the only Japanese company in the index to decline. Flex LNG fell 1.6%, as did Nakilat, which failed to maintain higher values achieved during the week.

Market Outlook and Influences

For now, falling spot rates are mainly reflected in spot fixtures, with most of the fleet remaining under long-term contracts. The increased volatility persists, with weather, natural gas prices, quarterly earnings, and geopolitical events cited as key factors over the next few weeks. The long-term outlook for the sector remains positive, supported by the scrapping of older steam vessels and the addition of new liquefaction capacity.
