Japan's Largest Offshore Wind Farm Now Fully Operational

According to Power Technology, the Kitakyushu Hibikinada offshore wind farm has started commercial operations in the Hibikinada Sea near Kitakyushu City. The facility, with a capacity of 220 megawatts, is the largest of its kind in Japan.

The project was developed by the Hibiki Wind Energy consortium, which secured development rights from the city in 2017. This special purpose company includes Kyuden Mirai Energy, Kyuden Corporation, Hokutaku Renewable Energy Service, J-Power, and Saibu Gas. Construction work started in March 2023, and the installation of all 25 turbines was completed in autumn 2025.

Vestas supplied the V174-9.6MW turbines for the project under an order placed in 2023, with a planned operational lifespan of two decades. Penta-Ocean Construction was responsible for the foundational and marine civil engineering work. The consortium's objectives include utilizing national offshore wind resources, supplying consistent clean electricity, and developing regional industrial expertise for larger future projects. The design also addresses specific local environmental challenges like typhoon resistance.
