January 2026 Personal Income and Spending Report Shows Gains

According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, personal income rose in January. Disposable personal income and personal consumption expenditures also increased for the month.

Personal income grew by 0.4 percent. Disposable personal income, which is income after taxes, increased by 0.9 percent. Consumer spending rose by 0.4 percent. After adjusting for prices, real personal consumption expenditures saw a smaller increase of 0.1 percent.

The rise in personal income was mainly driven by higher compensation, personal dividend income, and personal current transfer receipts. Compensation increased, with private wages and salaries seeing significant gains in both services-producing and goods-producing industries. Government wages and salaries also rose. The increase in personal current transfer receipts was largely due to higher social security benefits, which included a cost-of-living adjustment.

Within consumer spending, a rise in spending on services was partially offset by a decline in spending on goods. Personal outlays, which include spending, interest payments, and transfer payments, increased. Personal saving was measured at 1.05 trillion dollars, resulting in a personal saving rate of 4.5 percent.

The price index for personal consumption expenditures increased 0.3 percent from the previous month. When excluding food and energy, the index rose 0.4 percent. Compared to the same month one year prior, the overall index was up 2.8 percent, while the index excluding food and energy increased 3.1 percent.

This report for January was originally scheduled for release in February but was rescheduled. The Bureau of Economic Analysis plans to release data for February on April 9.
