IRS Direct File Program Discontinued for 2026 Tax Season

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, the IRS Direct File program has been eliminated for the 2026 tax filing season. The program, which previously allowed taxpayers in 25 states to file directly online with the IRS regardless of income, was discontinued before the current season began.

Free Filing Options Remain Available for Many

Several free tax preparation software options are still accessible for individuals with 2025 income of $89,000 or less and for active military members. Taxpayers looking to file their 2025 tax returns online for free may have multiple pathways.

IRS Free File Program

Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less in 2025 can access free tax preparation software through IRS-trusted companies for federal returns. Some partners in this program also offer free state tax preparation. Eight trusted partners provide this software, each with its own eligibility requirements based on income, age, location, and military status.

Additional Free Filing Services

For those comfortable preparing their own returns without guided software, the IRS Free File Fillable Forms are available electronically regardless of income. A service called MilTax offers free electronic filing for active or recently active service members, including National Guard and reserve members and Coast Guardsmen, and their immediate families.

Private Company and Volunteer Assistance

Some private tax preparation companies offer free federal tax filing options for eligible taxpayers, often for simple returns. Separately, IRS-based volunteer programs provide free assistance. These are run by tax professionals and are generally located at community centers, libraries, schools, and shopping malls. One such program, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, offers free tax help for those preparing their own returns who make $69,000 or less, have disabilities, or have limited English-speaking abilities.
