Industry Groups Demand EU Conclude Google Antitrust Probe and Impose Fine

Several European industry associations have called on antitrust regulators to conclude a long-running investigation into Alphabet's Google. According to a Reuters report, the groups sent a letter to European Union leaders requesting the probe be finished imminently and that a fine be imposed.

The letter was signed by the European Publishers Council, the European Magazine Media Association, the European Tech Alliance, EU Travel Tech, and other organizations. These groups argue that the extended investigation is damaging European companies, impairing their ability to invest and grow, with some facing financial difficulties.

The European Commission initiated this investigation under the Digital Markets Act nearly two years ago. Regulators had previously stated an intent to resolve such cases within one year and announced formal charges last year.

The industry coalition expressed concern that the Commission's credibility is at stake and that pressure to weaken the Digital Markets Act must not appear successful. They have asked for a formal decision finding Alphabet non-compliant, which would include an order to stop the contested practices and a significant financial penalty.

Google has proposed several measures to address concerns from rivals and regulators since the charges were made. Competing firms have stated these proposals are not adequate, while Google denies any wrongdoing regarding favoring its own services in search results.

The Commission and Google did not provide immediate comments on the matter.
