India's Iron Ore Price Decreases to $41.5 per Ton

India Iron Ore Export Price in November 2022

In November 2022, the iron ore price stood at $41.5 per ton (FOB, India), falling by -1.7% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 an increase of 31% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $142 per ton. From March 2022 to November 2022, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In November 2022, the country with the highest price was China ($52.0 per ton), while the average price for exports to Qatar ($13.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2021 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+28.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

India Iron Ore Export Prices by Type

As there is only one major exported type of iron ore, the average price level is determined by prices for iron ores and concentrates, non-agglomerated.

From November 2021 to November 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for iron ore and concentrate, non-agglomerated amounted to +2.3% per month.

India Iron Ore Exports

In November 2022, overseas shipments of iron ores and concentrates increased by 102% to 375K tons, rising for the second consecutive month after two months of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2022 with an increase of 336% m-o-m.

In value terms, iron ore exports skyrocketed to $16M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2022 when exports increased by 321% against the previous month.

India Iron Ore Exports by Type

Iron ores and concentrates, non-agglomerated (375K tons) was the largest type of iron ore exported from India, accounting for a approximately 100% share of total exports.

From November 2021 to November 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of iron ores and concentrates, non-agglomerated stood at +18.2%.

In value terms, iron ores and concentrates, non-agglomerated ($16M) also remains the largest type of iron ore exported from India.

From November 2021 to November 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of iron ores and concentrates, non-agglomerated amounted to +20.9%.

India Iron Ore Exports by Country

China (271K tons) was the main destination for iron ore exports from India, with a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, iron ore exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Qatar (52K tons), fivefold.

From November 2021 to November 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to China amounted to +10.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Qatar (+252.6% per month) and Kenya (+232.4% per month).

In value terms, China ($14M) emerged as the key foreign market for iron ore exports from India, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($673K), with a 4.3% share of total exports.

From November 2021 to November 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to China was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Kenya (+185.4% per month) and Qatar (+180.3% per month).
