Hyundai Challenges Tesla in Humanoid Robotics with Major 2026 Investment

Tesla's original vision for mass-market electric vehicles, which began over two decades ago, has largely been accomplished. The company subsequently shifted its focus toward robotics, artificial intelligence, and driverless vehicles, leading some investors to believe it would distance itself from traditional automotive competitors.

Contrary to those expectations, another automaker has now announced significant investment in similar high-tech fields. South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group recently announced it would invest $6 billion in a new high-tech robot. The South Korean plant will not only build robots developed in-house, it will have a massive solar-powered hydrogen production facility and a data center to support its AI capability in future products.

While several automakers, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota, are exploring humanoid robots for use on assembly lines, Hyundai's stock price experienced a notable increase following its announcement. Analysts from Morgan Stanley project the humanoid robotics market could reach $5 trillion by 2050.

Hyundai's move into robotics may not be entirely unexpected, as the company acquired Boston Dynamics in 2021 and showcased a bipedal droid at a technology exposition in early 2026. Around the time of that acquisition, Tesla was also unveiling its own humanoid robot concept at an event, though it featured a person in a suit rather than a working prototype.

For investors, assessing the potential of the robotics sector remains difficult. Tesla is considered among the early developers in the humanoid robot space. The company has stated its latest generation robot is in its final development phase, with initial production targeted for the latter part of 2026.
