Hong Kong Export Credit Insurer Keeps Premiums Low Despite Middle East Tensions

According to a report from the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong's official export credit insurer is maintaining low premiums and expanding support for small and medium-sized enterprises. This approach persists despite rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that are causing concerns for global trade.

The Hong Kong Export Credit Insurance Corporation has continued to offer concessions to exporters, diverging from the conventional trade credit insurance model where insurers typically raise premiums when risks increase. The corporation's commissioner stated that instead of passing more risk to policyholders, they have maintained supportive measures.

The chairwoman of the insurer's advisory board noted that Hong Kong's direct exposure to the Middle East remains relatively small, which has contained the immediate impact of regional tensions on local exporters. The overall trade volume with the Middle East represents a minor portion of Hong Kong's total exports, and the corporation has not received client complaints regarding problems linked to the region.

To assist smaller exporters, the corporation has been providing free pre-shipment risk cover for businesses with annual sales below a specified threshold. This coverage protects exporters if overseas buyers cancel orders before shipment.
