In January 2023, the chlorides price stood at $162 per ton (CIF, Hong Kong, China), with an increase of 54% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2022 when the average import price increased by 109% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $977 per ton in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to January 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2023, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($166 per ton), while the price for China totaled $114 per ton.

In January 2023, supplies from abroad of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) decreased by -16.7% to 2.6K tons, falling for the third consecutive month after two months of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2022 with an increase of 100% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 3.4K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to January 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chlorides imports skyrocketed to $415K (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. In general, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 with an increase of 83% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 1.8K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to January 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In January 2023, China (2.5K tons) was the main chlorides supplier to Hong Kong, accounting for a 99% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (22 tons), with a 0.9% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest.
In value terms, China ($290K) constituted the largest supplier of chlorides to Hong Kong, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($3.7K), with a 0.9% share of total imports.
