Hong Kong Beer Prices Up 4%: $955 per Thousand Litres
Hong Kong, China Beer Import Price in January 2023
In January 2023, the beer price stood at $955 per thousand litres (CIF, Hong Kong, China), rising by 4.1% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to January 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in July 2022 an increase of 5.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in January 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($2.4 per litre), while the price for China ($667 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+11.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Hong Kong, China Beer Imports
In January 2023, purchases abroad of beer was finally on the rise to reach 13M litres for the first time since October 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 with an increase of 55% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 16M litres. From August 2022 to January 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, beer imports surged to $12M (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. In general, total imports indicated a mild increase from January 2022 to January 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on January 2023 figures, imports increased by +28.1% against December 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 with an increase of 63% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $13M. From August 2022 to January 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Hong Kong, China Beer Imports by Country
In January 2023, China (7.5M litres) constituted the largest supplier of beer to Hong Kong, accounting for a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, beer imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (3.5M litres), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Ireland (393K litres), with a 3% share.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China totaled +4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: South Korea (-0.9% per month) and Ireland (+6.7% per month).
In value terms, the largest beer suppliers to Hong Kong were China ($5M), South Korea ($4.3M) and Japan ($739K), with a combined 81% share of total imports.
Japan, with a CAGR of +15.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
