Havkraft Completes Sea Trials for Wave Energy Pilot Device

Havkraft, a Norwegian wave power developer, has concluded sea trials for its pilot device. According to a report from Offshore Energy, the data collected is intended to inform subsequent development phases.

The company first conducted a laboratory test in the spring of 2025. A scaled test unit named Ocean One was later deployed at a site near Maloy in early January, positioned at a depth of ten meters. The sea trial campaign, which concluded recently, focused on evaluating the anchoring and reaction systems. The company stated the objective was to reach a specific technology readiness level and gather necessary information for turbine and power take-off system manufacturing.

Havkraft characterized the testing in ocean conditions as a vital step for developing reliable technology, noting the results were encouraging and the pilot performed well. The company described the completion as a significant milestone for its progress and for sustainable ocean energy. The physical pilot unit was fabricated by Easyform in Maloy, with instrumentation handled by Stadt Towing Tank and installation carried out by Abyss.

The same pilot device is scheduled for redeployment in 2027 for a more comprehensive system test, which is a required step before further investment. A future full-scale pilot is planned for operation in deeper water. The demonstration project received financial backing from Innovation Norway.

Separately, Havkraft announced a collaboration agreement with StarCharge Americas. The partnership aims to integrate battery solutions with the wave energy technology to supply backup power during intervals of lower wave energy production, thereby supporting stable energy delivery. The company indicated that marine-adapted battery systems would facilitate customer adoption of its off-grid renewable solutions. The two firms intend to work together on projects in Norway and other international markets.
