Hapag-Lloyd's 2030 Strategy: Expanding India Operations to 3 Million TEU

According to a report from The Maritime Executive, the liner company Hapag-Lloyd has detailed a strategy for cooperation and expansion focused on India. The carrier currently operates six dedicated services that include India and aims to increase its volume handled in the region to approximately 3 million TEU by 2030.

India has sought to attract major shipping lines as part of a broader effort to grow its maritime industries. This initiative includes encouraging carriers to build and repair ships domestically, alongside adjustments to cabotage rules and plans for developing national carriers. Other large firms, including CMA CGM, Maersk, and MSC, have taken steps such as reflagging vessels and exploring opportunities in the country.

Hapag-Lloyd has signed three Letters of Intent to deepen its involvement. The company intends to reflag as many as four vessels under the Indian registry, a process that requires employing Indian officers and crew but grants access to the domestic market. No specific timeline or vessel details have been set, pending further commercial discussions.

A further area of focus is cooperation on developing a ship recycling ecosystem in India that aligns with the EU Ship Recycling Regulation. The envisioned system could provide capacity for recycling up to 100 vessels. The company also foresees discussions on a strategic cooperation related to the development of Vadhavan Port, a major upcoming infrastructure project located north of Mumbai, in collaboration with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority.

Hapag-Lloyd plans to contribute its shipping and terminal expertise to support the port's development, which is expected to strengthen the country's maritime logistics network. The company already holds a strategic investment in J M Baxi, a private firm operating terminals and inland transport within India.
