Gulf Energy Strikes Disrupt Global LNG Supply, Raising Prices

According to Euronews, a series of missile and drone strikes on key oil and gas facilities across the Gulf region is unsettling energy supply and exposing systemic vulnerabilities. These incidents, which form part of a wider confrontation involving Iran, have grown more frequent and damaging in recent days, pushing global liquefied natural gas prices higher as markets react to the risk.

Significant damage was reported at multiple sites within Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar, the world's largest LNG export hub, following attacks. Authorities contained fires with no casualties, but the physical impact was substantial. Analysts note that previous production halts were often precautionary, but the latest strikes have caused direct damage, changing the situation dramatically.

The scope of attacks is widening, with an oil facility in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, also targeted. The full extent of the damage remains unclear, but repairs are expected to take several months and may only begin after the conflict ends. It is uncertain if partial operations can restart sooner.

The implications are global. Qatar supplies approximately one-fifth of worldwide LNG exports, with most flowing through the Ras Laffan complex. A prolonged disruption threatens to tighten already sensitive markets, particularly as Europe begins stockpiling gas for winter. Analysts suggest that Europe's purchasing power could attract available supply, leaving more price-sensitive Asian economies at a disadvantage.

Beyond immediate supply shocks, the attacks reveal multi-layered vulnerabilities across the Gulf's entire energy system, from production to shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz. Persistent instability could prompt longer-term shifts in investment and trade flows.

Industry experts highlight that the disruption stems not only from physical damage but also from the operational challenges of an active conflict zone. The sector faces psychological and reputational pressure, with consultants noting that prudent operators are unlikely to risk resuming production under current conditions. They emphasize that the LNG industry lacks spare capacity, as production cannot be quickly increased and new projects require years of development.

Signs of enduring disruption are emerging, with QatarEnergy offering several LNG delivery slots for April at a terminal in Belgium, indicating potential outages may last longer than first anticipated.
