Gold Prices Rebound Amid Economic Uncertainty

Gold prices experienced a rebound on Thursday following a sharp decline from their recent record highs, as investors closely monitored developments regarding tariffs and the broader economic outlook. According to a report, the precious metal had surged to an all-time high of nearly $3,500 an ounce earlier in the week, driven by investor concerns over escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and China, coupled with President Trump's criticisms of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

Despite backing off from its highs after President Trump suggested a potential reduction in tariffs on China and confirmed no plans to dismiss Powell, gold has still achieved a remarkable 28% increase since the beginning of the year. This surge is attributed to fears that tariffs could hinder economic growth and trigger inflation, prompting investors to seek refuge in gold, a traditional hedge against inflation. As of late Thursday, gold was trading around $3,350.

Technical analysis of XAUUSD's chart reveals that gold's price movement this week formed a bearish shooting star candlestick pattern, following a record high. The downside move was accompanied by a significant drop in the relative strength index (RSI) below overbought levels, indicating a shift in momentum. Observing the broader trend, the commodity has been on an upward trajectory since mid-December, aligning with an Elliot Wave pattern, typically followed by a corrective phase.

Key support levels to monitor include an initial potential drop to $3,145, aligning with the early-April swing high and the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level. A further decline could see gold testing support at $2,955, just above the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level, offering buying opportunities near the February peak and April trough. Failure to defend this level could push prices towards the $2,790 support, above the 78.6% Fibonacci retracement level, attracting interest around the October 2024 swing high.

Conversely, recovery in gold prices might lead to another attempt at the $3,500 mark, where tactical traders could consider securing profits.
