Gold Prices Plummet Amid Global Stock Market Rally

Gold prices have experienced a steep decline, retreating significantly since last week as global stock markets saw a relief rally. This shift comes amid signs of a de-escalation in the global trade war, particularly between the United States and China, as reported by Yahoo Finance. Spot gold and gold futures have both dropped approximately 6.5% from their all-time highs reached last Tuesday, with investors seemingly taking profits due to a reduction in haven demand.

Strategists at Barclays Plc have noted that the recent gold rally was outpacing fundamentals, appearing technically stretched following its surge. Hedge funds have reacted by cutting their net long futures and options positions on gold to a more than one-year low, according to Bloomberg. Michael Brown, a senior research strategist at Pepperstone, highlighted that buying interest has particularly diminished in Asia.

Gold's performance had been buoyed by economic uncertainties and tariff fears, with the precious metal rising over 25% this year as a hedge against financial crises and inflation. The euros strength against the US dollar also played a role, making gold more attractive to European investors. Gold ETF purchases in Europe reached $1 billion (EUR0.88 billion) in March, ranking it as the second-largest buying region.

However, several factors are contributing to potential downside risks for gold in the near term. The recovery in risk sentiment, driven by President Trump's announcement to substantially cut tariffs on China, has led to a broad rally in global stock markets. This shift may prompt portfolio re-positioning among fund managers and retail investors. Additionally, the rapid increase in gold prices has resulted in overbought signals, with traders taking profits and establishing short positions.

Central banks and individual investors may also slow their pace of gold purchases due to the sharp price rally. Economic uncertainties could impact retail investors' ability to invest in gold. Furthermore, while gold rallies are often supported by loose monetary policy, inflationary risks linked to Trump's tariffs might lead central banks to slow down interest rate cuts, potentially causing a liquidity crunch.
