Gold Price Stalls Near $5,175 Amid Conflict, Defying Historical Surge Pattern

According to a report from Scrap Monster, the price of gold has shown limited reaction during the initial phase of a recent conflict, contrasting with its behavior during a previous 12-day war last year. During that earlier period, the metal surged but then relinquished its gains following a ceasefire announcement. This time, after strikes were launched on February 28, the price initially increased from $5,296 to $5,423 per troy ounce, yet a subsequent sell-off pushed it down by over six percent to $5,085 on March 3. In the following week, as the situation escalated, trading occurred between $5,050 and $5,200, with a final observed spot price of $5,175.

Analysts point to multiple factors for this restrained price action. Ross Norman of Metals Daily cited a stronger U.S. dollar and higher Treasury yields as contributing elements. He also noted that rising oil prices, potentially driven by concerns over a key maritime corridor, could lead to persistent inflation and possibly higher interest rates as central banks respond. Such an environment typically enhances the attractiveness of yield-bearing assets like government bonds compared to non-yielding gold.

Norman observed that recent price movements for precious metals have been subdued following significant activity in prior months. He also stated that some institutional investors have grown apprehensive about maintaining gold holdings due to its atypical volatility. Another perspective from Amer Halawi of Al Ramz suggests that conflicts can initially provoke panic selling, leading to a broad liquidation where even traditional safe-haven assets are sold until market participants reassess the situation. Historically, shocks have prompted an immediate sell-off in gold before a potential recovery.

Despite the current short-term volatility, major financial institutions maintain positive long-term outlooks. J.P. Morgan anticipates prices could rise to $6,300 per ounce by the conclusion of 2026, while Deutsche Bank has reiterated a year-end target of $6,000.
