Global Urban Transport Update: New Services, Contracts, and 2028 Summit

According to a recent industry round-up from Railway Gazette, new tram services have commenced in Lyon. The extension is expected to eventually serve tens of thousands of daily passengers.

In Germany, a transport operator in Halle has received the first of dozens of new trams designed for efficient passenger flow. The vehicles include specific driver assistance features.

The International Association of Public Transport has chosen Hong Kong's MTR Corporation to host a major global summit in 2028, marking the event's first Asia-Pacific location in over a century. The summit is anticipated to draw thousands of international participants. The host corporation expressed its intention to highlight the city's collaborative public transport model.

Meanwhile, the city of Turku in Finland has initiated a public consultation process for a proposed tramway project. A decision on moving forward is anticipated later this year, with a potential opening date several years in the future.

For a light rail demonstrator project in Coventry, a design consultancy has been appointed to lead the next phase.

A financial services group has arranged debt financing to support a major investment by Cologne's transport operator. The funds are earmarked for a new depot, charging infrastructure, and zero-emission buses. The financing involves several institutional investors. A senior executive stated that the arrangement supports urban mobility transformation and ecological goals through public-private cooperation.

Finally, due to the conflict in Iran, a major public transport association has called off its 2026 summit, which was scheduled for Dubai. The organization is now looking at alternative ways to maintain industry engagement ahead of its next planned summit.
