Despite a Decrease in Exports, Ethiopia and India Remain Major Exporters of Sesame Seed
Ethiopia and India remain key exporters of sesame seed with a share of X% in the global exports in 2016. In that year, Ethiopia’s sesame seed exports increased significantly +X% y-o-y, amounting to $X (IndexBox estimates). By contrast to Ethiopia, India had steadily reduced sesame seed exports over the past two years, which led to weakening of India’s share in terms of the global exports by -X percentage points from 2012 to 2016. Nevertheless, these countries remains the leading suppliers of sesame seed to the world market, with a significant margin ahead of the third main exporter – Sudan.
Sudan demonstrated a record increase in sesame seed exports over the period under review. The rise began in 2012, when exports indicated a sustainable growth. This allowed Sudan to significantly strengthen its position in 2016, +X percentage points againt 2012. In addition, Sudan recorded a substantial volume of exports against the other main suppliers.
Exports Prices in the Major Supplying Countries Indicated a Downwards Trend over the Last Two Years
The average export price for sesame seed stood at $X per tonne in 2016, dropping by -X% annually over the period under report. From 2012 to 2016, the largest degree of price decline was recorded in Nigeria (-X%), followed by Ethiopia (-X%), Burkina Faso (-X%) and India (-X%).
Exports prices for sesame seed varied considerably by country of origin. Myanmar (X USD/tonne) was high priced supplier, while Burkina Faso (X USD/tonne) and Nigeria (X USD/tonne) were among the lowest.
China Remains the Leading Market for Imported Sesame Seed in the World
Sesame seed are widely imported throughout the world, however, China remains the leading importer, comprising approx. X% of the total figures. After a significant growth from 2012 to 2014, China’s imports decreased over the next two years, but China still retains the global leadership in 2016. Turkey and Japan stood the second and the third main importers of sesame seed, respectively; however, from 2015 Turkey’s and Japan’s imports were inferior to China’s imports.
Despite of decline of imports over the last two years, the overall trend patten still remains positive. Therefore, and due to the large volume of imports, China is considered to be an attractive market for foreign sesame seed suppliers.
Import Prices Declined Sharply for the Second Consecutive Year
The average import price for sesame seed was $X per tonne in 2016. After peaking in 2014, import prices for sesame seed decreased sharply over the last two years; thereby the overall trend pattern was downward, with an average annual rate of -X% from 2007 to 2016.
However, there were large differences among importing countries. The U.S. (X USD/tonne) and Turkey (X USD/tonne) were a high priced destinations, while China (X USD/tonne) was among the lowest.
