Global Equity Funds See Largest Weekly Selloff in 3 Months

According to Reuters, global equity funds faced their largest weekly selloff in three months during the period ending March 18. Investors reduced risk exposure ahead of major central bank meetings, citing concerns over inflation and economic effects related to international conflict.

Net sales from global equity funds reached $20.3 billion, marking the most substantial weekly divestment since mid-December. Major central banks, including the Federal Reserve, held interest rates steady but indicated a potential for tighter policy ahead. The European Central Bank may begin discussing rate increases as early as April if geopolitical tensions do not ease.

Outflows from U.S. equity funds surged to a net $24.78 billion, a high not seen in two and a half months. European funds also experienced outflows of $2.13 billion. In contrast, Asian equity funds received net inflows of $5.45 billion.

Despite the broader trend, equity sectoral funds attracted weekly inflows of $1.66 billion. The industrial and technology sectors drew significant investments of $1.83 billion and $1.78 billion, respectively.

Demand for bond funds softened to an 11-week low, attracting net weekly investments of $5.49 billion. Short-term bond funds and government bond funds still saw notable net purchases of $6.32 billion and $5.19 billion. Money market funds gained $32.57 billion in net investments as safe-haven demand continued for an eighth consecutive week.

Investors divested approximately $5.19 billion from gold and precious metals commodity funds, the largest weekly net sales in over seven years. In emerging markets, equity fund outflows eased to a net $127 million from a significantly higher figure the prior week. Bond funds in these markets suffered net sales of $2.83 billion, according to data covering a large number of funds.
