Global Equity Funds See Largest Weekly Outflows Since Mid-December

According to Reuters, global equity funds experienced their most significant weekly capital withdrawals since mid-December during the period ending March 11. Disruptions to oil supplies, linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions, fueled investor concerns about inflation and broader economic stability.

Data from LSEG Lipper indicates the outflows totaled $7.05 billion. This follows a larger withdrawal in the week through December 17, 2025. The price of Brent crude oil surpassed $100 per barrel as markets contended with a major supply disruption, which severely impacted shipping in key maritime routes.

Market uncertainty, as measured by a key index, reached its highest point since November earlier this month. U.S. equity funds saw outflows of approximately $7.77 billion, continuing a trend from the prior week. European funds also faced divestment, while Asian funds attracted new investment.

Within sector-specific funds, financial and healthcare categories saw substantial net sales. In contrast, industrial sector funds gained inflows. An investment professional suggested that recent declines in certain regional markets may not fully reflect fundamental conditions, noting that a shift in sentiment could lead to a rapid recovery.

Investor movement into global bond funds slowed to a ten-week low. The high yield bond segment recorded its largest weekly outflow in nearly a year, while short-term bond funds saw increased inflows. Money market funds continued to attract capital for a seventh consecutive week, indicating a preference for safer assets.

Conversely, funds focused on gold and precious metals experienced net sales for three of the past four weeks. Emerging markets equity funds ended an eleven-week streak of net purchases with significant outflows, and their bond funds also recorded net withdrawals.
