Global Electric Vehicle Sales Decline for Second Month in February 2026

According to a report from Oilprice.com, worldwide sales of electric vehicles declined for a second consecutive month in February. The primary factor was a significant reduction in purchases within China, the largest market for such vehicles.

New registrations for electric cars and hybrids in China fell substantially following the conclusion of a tax incentive program late last year and the termination of funding for vehicle trade-in initiatives. The reported figure for February was under half a million units.

Overall global sales for the month decreased to approximately one million vehicles, representing the lowest monthly total in two years. The North American market also contributed to the decline, with sales dropping for the fifth straight month after the President of the United States restricted incentives, resulting in fewer than 90,000 units sold.

In contrast, the European market experienced growth, with registrations rising as governments there maintained support policies viewed as essential for transportation electrification and climate objectives. Germany reinstated a financial support scheme that had previously been canceled due to budget concerns, allocating funds through the end of the decade to assist its automotive sector.

Analysts note that ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting oil markets could influence future electric vehicle adoption, potentially encouraging shifts away from fossil fuels but also increasing overall economic pressures on consumers.
