Germany's Plan to Double Data Center and Quadruple AI Processing by 2030

According to a Reuters report, the German government has announced intentions to significantly increase domestic data center capacity and artificial intelligence processing power by the end of the decade. The plan aims to at least double data center capacity and achieve a fourfold increase in AI data processing by 2030.

Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger has put forward a series of proposals designed to enhance the country's competitive position, which other ministers are scheduled to consider. The measures include allocating specific land for development and accelerating regulatory approval processes. A key fiscal change would allow municipal business taxes from new data centers to go directly to the host town or city, rather than to the corporate headquarters location.

The strategy also seeks to foster greater cooperation among various companies involved in the AI supply chain. While the government stated it is open to investment from international sources, the primary focus is on attracting European and German companies. Major international technology firms are noted as significant investors in existing German data infrastructure.

Current figures indicate that AI data center capacity in Germany reached 530 megawatts at the close of the previous year, with a substantial portion operated by providers based outside the country. The broader European context shows a trend toward seeking greater sovereign control over AI infrastructure, influenced by factors including changing trade policies, geopolitical tensions, and differing regulatory approaches to online content.
