German Trade Surplus Widens to €21.2 Billion in January 2026 as Imports Fall

Preliminary data from the German Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, shows the country's trade balance expanded at the start of the year. On a calendar and seasonally adjusted basis, exports in January were valued at 130.5 billion euros, while imports reached 109.2 billion euros. This resulted in a trade surplus of 21.2 billion euros for the month.

Compared to the previous month of December, exports decreased by 2.3 percent. Imports saw a more pronounced decline of 5.9 percent over the same period. When measured against the same month a year earlier, exports showed a modest increase of 0.6 percent, while imports fell by 4.0 percent.

Trade with EU and Non-EU Countries

Trade with fellow European Union member states declined month-on-month. Exports to the EU fell by 4.8 percent to 71.6 billion euros, and imports from the bloc dropped by 6.5 percent to 55.6 billion euros. Within the EU, trade with nations in the Eurozone and those outside it both contracted.

In contrast, exports to countries outside the EU, referred to as third countries, rose by 1.0 percent to 58.8 billion euros. Imports from these nations decreased by 5.3 percent to 53.6 billion euros.

Key Trading Partners

The United States was the top destination for German exports in January, receiving goods worth 13.2 billion euros, an increase of 11.7 percent from December. Exports to the United Kingdom decreased by 2.6 percent to 6.8 billion euros, while exports to China fell sharply by 13.2 percent to 6.3 billion euros.

China remained the largest source of German imports, though the value fell by 8.3 percent to 14.2 billion euros. Imports from the United States declined by 8.2 percent to 7.2 billion euros, while imports from the United Kingdom increased by 2.5 percent to 3.0 billion euros.

Trade with Russia continued to contract significantly. Exports decreased by 8.3 percent month-on-month to 0.5 billion euros, and imports fell by 20.0 percent to 0.1 billion euros. Compared to January of the previous year, exports and imports to and from Russia were down by 15.9 percent and 19.7 percent, respectively.

The statistical office notes that these are preliminary results and that detailed data for analysis will be published later in March.
