German Inflation Slows to 1.9% in February 2026 on Weaker Food Price Rise

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, the inflation rate in Germany, measured by the change in the consumer price index compared to the same month of the previous year, was 1.9 percent in February. This represents a slight deceleration from the rate of 2.1 percent recorded in January. The office's president noted that the increase in consumer prices moderated in February, with a marked slowdown in food price inflation exerting a dampening effect, while services continued to push the rate higher.

Compared to the previous month of January, consumer prices rose by 0.2 percent in February. The harmonized index of consumer prices, used for European comparisons, showed an annual increase of 2.0 percent and a monthly increase of 0.4 percent for the same month.

Diverging Price Trends Across Categories

The overall price development was shaped by contrasting movements in different product groups. Energy product prices were 1.9 percent lower in February than a year earlier, with household energy costs falling by 3.5 percent. Consumers benefited from lower prices for natural gas, electricity, and district heating, partly due to government measures implemented since the start of the year. In contrast, solid fuel prices rose by 6.0 percent over the year, while motor fuel prices increased by 0.3 percent.

Food prices rose by 1.1 percent year-on-year in February, a slower pace than the 2.1 percent increase seen in January. Significant price increases were observed for sugar, jam, honey, and confectionery, as well as for meat and meat products, and fruit and fresh vegetables. Conversely, edible fats and oils became notably cheaper, as did potatoes and dairy products. Egg prices rose significantly.

Services and Core Inflation Remain Elevated

The inflation rate excluding food and energy, often called core inflation, remained at 2.5 percent in February, unchanged from January. This indicates that price pressures in other important goods areas continued to be above average. Services prices were a key driver, rising by 3.2 percent compared to February of the previous year. Notable increases were recorded for social services, combined passenger transport, vehicle maintenance and repair, health insurance services, restaurant services, and water supply. Net cold rents, a significant component, rose by 2.1 percent.

Overall goods prices increased by 0.8 percent year-on-year. Non-alcoholic beverages and tobacco products saw notable price rises, while large household appliances became cheaper. The statistical office confirmed that recent geopolitical events had no impact on the February price results.
