Agricultural Producer Prices Fall 10.1% in January

German Agricultural Producer Prices Fall 10.1% Year-on-Year in January

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, producer prices for agricultural products in Germany were 10.1 percent lower in January than in the same month a year earlier. This decline accelerated from the previous month's annual rate of decrease.

Compared to December, overall agricultural producer prices fell by 2.3 percent in January. The data shows a continuing downward trend in annual price changes over recent months.

Diverging Trends in Plant and Animal Products

Prices for plant-based products dropped 11.9 percent year-on-year in January. In contrast, prices for animals and animal products decreased by 8.9 percent over the same period. However, monthly developments moved in opposite directions, with plant product prices rising 1.9 percent from December while animal product prices fell 4.7 percent.

Notable Price Movements for Specific Goods

The decline in plant product prices was partly driven by a sharp drop in potato prices, which were nearly 50 percent lower than a year ago. Fruit prices also fell significantly, with table apples down over 26 percent. Vegetable prices rose slightly overall, led by increases for lettuce and mushrooms, though cabbage prices declined substantially. Grain became less expensive, and prices for commercial plants and fodder plants also fell. Wine prices saw a modest increase.

Within animal production, milk prices fell sharply both year-on-year and month-on-month. Egg prices rose significantly compared to the previous year. Prices for animals increased slightly overall, driven by higher cattle prices, while slaughter pig prices continued to fall. Poultry prices rose, primarily due to increases for other poultry such as ducks and turkeys.
