GENESIS Simulation Platform Optimizes Warehouse Logistics with AI

A collaborative project between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Mecalux has resulted in a new simulation platform for logistics networks, according to Packaging Europe. The system, named GENESIS, was developed by MIT's Center for Transportation & Logistics in partnership with Mecalux to test inventory replenishment strategies without disrupting actual warehouse activities.

The platform employs machine learning models to analyze various scenarios, considering factors such as regional demand forecasts, transportation expenses, and warehouse capacity. Based on this analysis, it proposes ideal stock quantities for each facility and indicates when restocking should occur. The tool produces statistical dashboards that help teams assess consumption trends, regional demand differences, risks of shortages, and supply problems.

A genetic algorithm within the system runs numerous simulations with different parameters to identify the most efficient logistics approach, allowing companies to compare options. It can alert users when transferring surplus stock from one facility is more advantageous than ordering new goods from suppliers, aiming to better utilize existing inventory and lower costs. The system also provides recommendations on transportation methods, including order fulfillment routes and shipment consolidation to improve efficiency.

Research engineers noted that a primary development challenge was achieving processing speed, enabling the evaluation of thousands of scenarios in minutes instead of days. This allows for practical tactical planning. The stated objective is to assist companies in reducing total logistics network costs while maintaining service quality.

The collaboration is now moving into a new phase, with plans to extend the application of artificial intelligence to other logistics areas such as internal replenishment and digital twins in automated storage. In a separate development, PepsiCo has entered a multi-year partnership with Siemens and NVIDIA to use digital twin technology and AI in its supply chain operations, with initial pilots in the United States. A report from an industry coalition has also highlighted potential applications for artificial intelligence in packaging design and waste management within supply chains.
