Fish Scales Offer Promising Path for Corneal Implants, University Study Finds

Research from the University of Granada suggests a novel use for discarded fish scales in addressing a critical medical shortage. Scientists from the university's Department of Histology have conducted a multi-year study on the material, which is commonly thrown away by markets.

The research focused on scales from carp and other frequently consumed fish. The analysis led to the creation of a transparent, durable, and biocompatible implant designed to repair damaged corneal tissue. The cornea, being avascular and prone to poor healing, often requires full transplantation when seriously diseased, but donor tissue is scarce relative to demand.

Findings published in the journal Materials & Design indicate that tests in laboratory settings and on animals have produced good functional outcomes. The researchers emphasize that the material's origin as a fishing industry by-product makes it both low-cost and widely available. They note this could provide an economic benefit to the local province by creating a new application for waste.

The work has received funding from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III. A hospital manager was present for the presentation of the results, reflecting clinical interest in the research.

While the current results are considered preliminary, they are seen as robust enough to warrant further investigation. The path to human use requires completing clinical trials, a process that typically spans several years and involves rigorous regulatory review. The development is not yet a clinical reality but represents a data-supported hypothesis in a field grappling with persistent donor shortages.
