Final Labour Force Survey TableBuilder Update Before Modernization Pause

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has issued a release concerning its TableBuilder product, which utilizes data from the monthly Labour Force Survey. This marks the final regular update before a pause in releases, which will last until a modernization program for the survey is finished.

The agency states the modernization aims to sustain high-quality statistics, maintain response rates, improve the experience for respondents, and increase operational efficiency. The Labour Force Survey itself is designed to measure the labour market activity of Australia's resident civilian population aged 15 years and over, providing national and state-level estimates of employment and unemployment.

The survey delivers detailed statistics on employed, unemployed, and people not in the labour force, alongside socio-demographic information. Certain data points, including industry and occupation, are only available for the months of February, May, August, and November.

The TableBuilder product enables users to create custom tables with Labour Force Survey data, combining both monthly and quarterly information. The agency notes that aggregated estimates from TableBuilder may show small differences from the main publications, but this has minimal impact on underlying data patterns. The product includes data from August 2006 through January 2026.

The LFS TableBuilder was released with updates including the addition of months from September 2025 to January 2026. It also introduces a new data item for the number of days worked and modifies an item related to weekend work. A function to calculate the mean for certain continuous summary options is currently unavailable.

The ABS cautions that regional estimates within TableBuilder are derived directly from survey responses and, due to smaller sample sizes, are of lower statistical quality than national or state-level figures. The agency recommends using modelled estimates for regional analysis where possible, or applying moving annual averages when using the direct survey estimates.

All data in TableBuilder undergoes a confidentiality process, which includes perturbation, a technique involving small random adjustments to cell values to prevent identification of individuals. This can cause tables not to sum perfectly and may occasionally result in components appearing larger than their totals.

The primary sources for headline labour market estimates remain the Labour Force, Australia and Labour Force, Detailed, Australia publications. The TableBuilder product is based on a longitudinal microdata set that includes a sample of modelled records, leading to slight variations in aggregated estimates compared to those main publications.
