A report from USDA AMS MyMarketNews details feeder cattle prices from several livestock auctions. In St. Joseph, Missouri, a market listed 5,330 head. At the Ft. Pierre Livestock auction in South Dakota, feeder steers weighing 500-600 pounds were priced at 493.00. Feeder heifers in the 400-500 pound range were listed at 450.00. Prices for medium and large frame animals showed a range across heavier weight categories.

Another auction in Ericson, Nebraska, reported 3,040 head. There, feeder steers between 500 and 600 pounds were listed from 448.00 to 495.00. Feeder heifers in the 400-500 pound category ranged from 457.50 to 517.50. A market in Herreid, South Dakota, with 1,980 head, listed similar weight categories with varying price ranges.

Futures and Slaughter Data

Futures market data showed changes for live and feeder cattle contracts. April live cattle futures settled at 230.900, a decline. March feeder cattle futures settled at 349.475, an increase. Grain futures also moved, with March corn settling higher at 4.5250 and March soybeans settling lower at 12.1100. May wheat futures at the Kansas City Board of Trade settled at 6.3000.

Estimated daily cattle slaughter for the reported day was 86,000 head. The estimated week-to-date total was 508,000 head. A separate summary for a different date listed a live steer average price of 234.77 on 10,216 head averaging 1,603 pounds. Dressed steer prices averaged 372.04.

Daily estimated boxed beef cutout values were reported, with Choice graded beef at 397.92 and Select at 391.54. The report also included a chart showing weekly average slaughter cattle prices over a multi-year period.
