Feeder Cattle Prices and Futures Decline as Grain Costs Rise

According to a USDA AMS MyMarketNews report, livestock auctions on Wednesday showed a range of prices for feeder cattle across several weight categories. In South Dakota, feeder steers weighing between 500 and 600 pounds were reported at a price range, while similar-weight heifers traded lower. Prices generally declined as animal weights increased at that location.

An Oklahoma market listed feeder steers in the 600 to 700 pound category, with heifers in the 500 to 600 pound range. A Kansas auction reported prices for feeder steers from 500 to 600 pounds and for heifers from 400 to 500 pounds.

Futures and Slaughter Data

Futures settlements for live cattle showed declines for April, June, and August contracts. Feeder cattle futures for March, April, and May also moved lower. Grain futures for corn and soybeans registered increases across multiple contract months, while wheat futures gained.

The estimated daily cattle slaughter for Wednesday was reported. The estimated weekly total to date was also provided, along with comparative figures from a week ago and a year ago. Boxed beef cutout values were listed for Choice and Select grades, with a total number of loads specified for various product categories.

A separate report on slaughter cattle prices included averages for live steers and dressed steers and heifers, with corresponding head counts and average weights. Prices for various lean categories of breaking, boning, and lean cows were also noted.
