FedEx Freight Q3 Revenue Drops 4.7% Amid Strategic Shift to Higher-Value Shipments

According to FreightWaves, FedEx Freight experienced pressure on its results in the fiscal quarter ending February 28. The company is progressing with an initiative to improve revenue quality by focusing on higher-value shipments, though this strategy is unfolding in an environment of muted demand.

Revenue for the quarter declined by 4.7 percent year-over-year to $1.99 billion. This decrease was driven by a 4.8 percent drop in tonnage, which itself resulted from a 5.7 percent decline in total shipments. The shipment decline was partially mitigated by a 1 percent increase in the average weight per shipment. Revenue per shipment increased by 1.2 percent compared to the prior year, and a general rate increase implemented at the start of the calendar year is reportedly achieving strong capture rates.

The unit's adjusted operating ratio was 93.3 percent, representing a deterioration of 580 basis points from the year-ago period. This calculation excluded $126 million in costs tied to a planned separation from its parent company. The performance was attributed to lower shipment volumes and an increase in salaries, wages, and benefits expenses as a percentage of revenue. The company has largely finished staffing a dedicated less-than-truckload sales team.

Management revised its outlook for the full fiscal year ending May 31. FedEx Freight's revenue is now projected to decline by a low-single-digit percentage for the fiscal year. For the fiscal fourth quarter, revenue is anticipated to be flat to down slightly, as growth in yield offsets a mid-single-digit percentage decline in shipments. The forecast for the unit's full-year adjusted operating income was lowered further, now expecting a $400 million decline versus a prior projection of a $300 million decrease.

Conversely, guidance for the broader consolidated corporation was raised. The parent company now expects full-year consolidated revenue to increase between 6 and 6.5 percent, up from a prior range of 5 to 6 percent. Adjusted earnings per share are projected to be between $19.30 and $20.10, an increase from the previous forecast.
