FedEx Freight Q3 2026 Results: Revenue Declines Amid Strategic Separation

FedEx Freight's performance faced challenges in the fiscal quarter ending February 28. The company's ongoing initiative to improve revenue quality by focusing on higher-value shipments proceeded against a backdrop of muted demand. A decline in total shipments was only partly counterbalanced by increases in both shipment weights and yields. Additional costs linked to a planned separation from its corporate parent continued to affect results.

Revenue for the quarter decreased 4.7% year-over-year to $1.99 billion. This decline was driven by a 4.8% drop in tonnage, which stemmed from a 5.7% reduction in the number of shipments, even as the average weight per shipment rose 1%. The increase in shipment weight presented a modest challenge to the yield metric, though revenue per shipment showed a 1.2% year-over-year improvement. Management noted that a general rate increase implemented at the start of the calendar year is achieving strong capture rates.

The unit's adjusted operating ratio deteriorated 580 basis points year-over-year to 93.3%. This result excluded $126 million in separation-related expenses. The performance was attributed to lower shipment volumes and a 410-basis-point increase in salaries, wages, and benefits expenses as a proportion of revenue. The company has largely finished staffing a dedicated sales team.

Management revised its outlook, now anticipating a low-single-digit percentage decline in revenue for the full fiscal year ending May 31. For the fiscal fourth quarter, revenue is projected to be flat to down slightly, with growth in yield expected to offset a mid-single-digit decline in shipments. The forecast for full-year adjusted operating income was also adjusted downward to a $400 million year-over-year decline.

In a related development, the parent corporation reported consolidated quarterly revenue of $24 billion, an 8% year-over-year increase. Adjusted earnings per share of $5.25 surpassed the result from the prior-year period. This adjusted figure excluded costs associated with the spinoff and optimization efforts.

Attention is now turning to an upcoming investor day scheduled for April 8, where long-term revenue and margin targets will be presented. The separation of the less-than-truckload business is scheduled for June 1, with shares expected to list on the New York Stock Exchange. As part of the separation transaction, the company completed a $3.7 billion debt offering in January.
