Fed Chair Powell: U.S. Job Creation Stalled Near Zero

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell stated that job creation in the United States has slowed to a level near zero. Powell made these remarks while presenting the central bank's latest economic projections, which indicated slightly higher projected economic growth and minimal change to the unemployment rate forecast.

Powell characterized the labor market as showing a degree of stability. However, he noted that a significant number of Federal Open Market Committee members are concerned about the very low level of job creation. He specified that, after accounting for data revisions over the prior six months, net job creation in the private sector is effectively zero.

Powell suggested this level of job growth may align with what the economy currently requires, given historically low growth in the labor force. He also observed that labor demand has softened. The unemployment rate, now at 4.4%, ticked back up in February. Job gains from December and January were revised downward, resulting in minimal job growth over a three-month period.

In its updated policy statement, the Federal Reserve removed prior language noting signs of stabilization in the unemployment rate. The new statement indicates that job gains have remained low and the unemployment rate has seen little recent change.
