Fashion Industry Tackles Waste and Emissions with Carbon-to-Cellulose Tech

The fashion sector acknowledges a significant waste issue, with vast quantities of textiles discarded continuously. According to a report from Yahoo Finance, the industry's carbon footprint exceeds that of international aviation and maritime shipping combined.

In response, various enterprises are exploring methods to recycle textile waste or create new materials that do not rely on fossil fuels. One startup, Rubi, employs biological processes outside of a cell to manufacture the foundational components for lyocell and viscose fabrics. The company's approach enables the production of cellulose from captured carbon dioxide.

Rubi has secured $7.5 million in funding to construct a demonstration-scale system for its cellulosic production. This system is intended to generate material measured in tens of tons, using carbon dioxide as a primary input. The investment round involved several venture capital firms and corporate investment arms.

The startup has reportedly entered into non-binding purchase agreements exceeding $60 million with a small number of partners. It has also conducted material tests with over a dozen pilot partners, which include several major apparel and retail brands.

Unlike some other companies that use engineered bacteria or chemical catalysts, Rubi's process centers on enzymes to transform carbon dioxide into cellulose. Traditionally, cellulose for textiles is sourced from trees, including from plantations and untouched forests.

The concept for using enzymes originated from the collaboration of the company's founders, who surveyed existing technologies before focusing on enzymatic processes. The enzyme industry is noted for its large scale and application in various sectors, suggesting existing capacity and potential for low-cost operation.

Rubi utilizes a sequence of enzymes to process waste carbon dioxide, employing computational methods to enhance the enzymes' performance and durability. In its current setup, enzymes in a water-based solution react with introduced carbon dioxide, producing white cellulose within minutes inside reactor modules designed to fit within shipping containers. The company aims to evolve this into a continuous production method.

Initially focusing on apparel manufacturers, the startup ultimately envisions its technology as a platform for supplying cellulose to a broad range of industries, aiming to produce essential chemicals and materials economically.
