European Feed Market Slows in March 2026 Amid High Costs and Geopolitical Uncertainty

According to a report from Hellenic Shipping News, the European feed market has seen a deceleration in trading activity since the beginning of March. Market participants attribute the slowdown to elevated commodity prices, costly freight, and currency fluctuations connected to the Middle East conflict, which are causing buyers to postpone acquisitions.

Participants describe a prevailing wait-and-see approach among buyers. A trader in Spain characterized conditions as very slow and quiet, noting that customers are only purchasing to cover immediate shortages for the coming days. Similarly, a trader in the Netherlands reported very few bids for the nearest delivery period, indicating thin market interest.

Recent assessments showed week-over-week price increases for key feed inputs. Soybean meal in the Netherlands and Spain, as well as corn in Spain, all registered gains for the week ending March 17. Despite these firmer prices, demand is reported as weak, with little market appetite amid the higher costs.

Logistics and foreign exchange are cited as significant challenges. Freight costs are estimated to have risen substantially, directly increasing delivered prices for commodities. The euro initially depreciated against the dollar at the onset of the Middle East conflict but has since stabilized, though traders note potential for renewed volatility due to uncertainty over interest rate expectations.

Demand for corn and soybean meal is limited, with many feed mills having already secured coverage for their prompt needs. Purchasing is cautious, with buyers only acting when necessary. In Spain, feed millers are currently not absorbing the full impact of the price surge because most immediate requirements are met, and there is hope the Middle East situation will not be prolonged. However, if disruptions continue, Spanish buyers may need to return to the market in the coming weeks.

Looking forward, Spanish buyers are anticipated to focus on securing supply for the June and July period when marketing campaigns overlap, particularly for cereals like wheat, barley, and corn. Purchasing strategies for cereals may depend on domestic harvest outcomes, with a good crop potentially leading buyers to favor local supply to mitigate price risk. For soybean meal, participants expect sufficient availability of South American origin material, including for summer shipments, which may alleviate supply concerns even if European buying remains restrained.
