European Clean Energy Projects Advance with New Financing and Operations

Several transactions and project milestones were reported in the European renewable energy sector this week, according to PV-Tech. A Spanish independent power producer secured financing for its initial hybrid battery storage projects in Portugal. The funding will support two projects combining solar generation with battery storage systems, with the solar components anticipated to become operational in the second quarter of 2026 and the batteries in the following quarter. The company described the financing as one of the first of its kind in Portugal backed by commercial banks and indicated plans to seek similar funding in other European markets.

In Romania, a Greek energy firm commenced commercial operations for two solar projects. These represent the company's first operational assets in the country, part of a larger portfolio acquired previously. Two additional projects from that acquisition are expected to reach commercial operation in 2026. The company is also developing a wind farm scheduled for completion in 2027, which would increase its total installed capacity in Romania significantly. The firm operates in several other countries and has stated targets for expanding its total renewable capacity by 2030.

Separately, project financing was closed for a portfolio of 21 ground-mounted solar plants across Italy. Initial commercial operations for some plants are expected in the first quarter of 2026, with others following through 2028. The financing structure supports a blend of projects, some benefiting from public incentive schemes and others operating on a merchant basis. Italy has a national target for installed solar capacity by 2030.

In Germany, an infrastructure investment firm acquired a solar plant that began commercial operations in April 2025. The asset was transferred to a fund focused on renewable projects on brownfield sites. The plant's output is secured by a guaranteed feed-in tariff for more than two decades. The seller noted the transaction demonstrated the successful collaboration between municipal project developers and institutional investors.
