European Battery Storage Projects Advance with 700 MWh Capacity in Development

A series of large-scale battery energy storage system projects are moving forward across Europe, according to a report from Energy-Storage.news. The collective capacity of projects currently being commissioned, built, or financed totals approximately 700 megawatt-hours.

Germany and Belgium See Project Milestones

In Germany, a battery storage facility in Waldkappel, Hesse, has been commissioned. The system has a capacity of 16 megawatts and 33 megawatt-hours. The project was sold in the second quarter of 2025 and features components housed in modular racks on a steel frame rather than in shipping containers. This may represent the first European deployment of this specific technology.

In Belgium, construction has begun on a 60-megawatt, 240-megawatt-hour system, which is anticipated to be operational in 2027. Separately, a different 12-megawatt, 24-megawatt-hour project in the country, where construction started in November 2025, has secured a five-year flexibility purchase agreement. The agreement is described as a partial fixed-price product structure claimed to be the first such arrangement in Belgium.

Activity in Latvia, Finland, Portugal, and France

In Latvia, a state-owned utility has placed orders for two battery storage systems, each with a capacity of 20 megawatts and 40 megawatt-hours. The total contract value for these projects is 22.5 million euros, with the equipment and service scope for the supplier valued at up to 15 million euros depending on options.

A German-headquartered investment firm has entered the Finnish market by acquiring an 85-megawatt, 170-megawatt-hour project. The total purchase price for this acquisition was 5.5 million euros.

In Portugal, financing has been secured for two hybrid solar and battery storage projects. One project combines 28 megawatts of solar with 24 megawatts of storage, while the other combines 40 megawatts of solar with 32 megawatts of storage. The solar components are expected to begin operation in the second quarter of 2026, with the battery systems following in the third quarter. This financing is noted as one of the first commercial bank-backed structured financings in Portugal for such hybrid projects.

In France, a debt facility of 65 million euros has been raised for the expansion of an existing battery storage project. Originally deployed in 2024 with a capacity of 105 megawatts and 100 megawatt-hours, the project is being augmented to 94 megawatts and 188 megawatt-hours. Battery deliveries for this expansion are expected in the current quarter, with commercial operation targeted for 2027. The project has a long-term tolling agreement with a power firm.
