Euro Leads German Non-EU Exports in 2025 as New Currency Data Series Launches

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the euro was the most used currency for German merchandise exports to countries outside the European Union in 2025. Preliminary results indicate 54.7 percent of these exports were settled in euros, while the US dollar accounted for 26.4 percent. The British pound followed at 4.8 percent, the Chinese renminbi yuan at 2.7 percent, and the Swiss franc at 2.4 percent. The remaining portion was handled in other currencies.

Dollar Dominates Import Payments

For imports from non-EU states, the US dollar was the most widespread payment method in 2025, used for 45.2 percent of transactions. The euro was used for 43.8 percent of imports, followed by the yuan, the Swiss franc, and the British pound. Only a small share of imports were paid for in other currencies.

Currency Use Varies by Trading Partner

Payment practices differed significantly across major trading partners. Exports to the United States were predominantly settled in US dollars, with a smaller portion in euros. In contrast, exports to China were mainly invoiced in euros, with the yuan and dollar also used. Trade with the United Kingdom saw a mix of euros and pounds, while exports to Switzerland were overwhelmingly in euros.

On the import side, goods from China were mostly paid for in US dollars, while euro payments were less common. Imports from the United States were heavily dominated by the dollar. Trade with Switzerland and the United Kingdom, however, saw the euro as the primary currency for German import payments.

New Monthly Data Series

The statistical office has begun offering monthly evaluations of foreign trade by invoice currency starting with the reporting month of January 2026. This new report details the original currencies used for payments in trade with non-EU states. The data is linked to other foreign trade characteristics such as partner countries and goods classifications.

In 2025, trade with non-EU nations represented 44.1 percent of Germany's total exports and 34.6 percent of total imports. The customs administration records the transaction currencies for this extra-EU trade. Comparable data for trade between EU member states is not collected in foreign trade statistics.
