EU Committee Approves Turnberry Deal, Moves to Zero Tariffs on US Goods

A key European Parliament committee has moved to implement a trade agreement with the United States, according to Euronews. The committee agreed to reduce European Union tariffs on American products to zero, aligning with a pact established in July 2025.

The committee adopted the legislation with 29 votes in favor. This step initiates the process to remove EU duties on a majority of US industrial goods, as outlined in the agreement known as the Turnberry deal. The accord was finalized following trade tensions linked to the nationalist trade agenda of the White House.

Under the terms of the agreement, the United States will maintain tariffs of 15% on EU goods. The European bloc, in turn, committed to eliminating its own tariffs and increasing investment in the US. The vote this week opens the path for full approval by the European Parliament, though final adoption could be delayed until April or May as further negotiations with EU member states are required.

Amendments proposed by members of the European Parliament may complicate these discussions. These include a sunset clause that would reactivate EU tariffs after 18 months without renewal, and a sunrise clause tying tariff reductions to Washington fulfilling its commitments. Lawmakers had previously delayed implementing the deal signed by the President of the European Commission and the President of the United States last summer, following new US tariffs imposed after a pivotal Supreme Court ruling in February.

The committee proceeded with the vote after US pressure and calls from the European Commission to advance the process. Members had expressed concerns about predictability for European businesses, especially after Washington launched new investigations into EU goods last week. US officials have expressed growing impatience, having previously assured EU counterparts they would adhere to the agreement, which also exempts sectors like EU aerospace.

A US ambassador to the EU stated on a social media platform that EU tariffs on US goods remain unchanged. The official expressed hope that the EU would finalize the agreement after a delay of over six months.
