According to a report from Yahoo Finance, ePost Global and ShipWise are broadening their capabilities for handling international returns. This move addresses challenges merchants face from increasing international return rates, more stringent customs regulations, and volatility in e-commerce logistics. The partnership allows merchants to manage international returns within the same platform used for outbound shipments, creating a unified system for forward and reverse logistics.

The initiative is designed to help e-commerce businesses process cross-border returns more efficiently amid complex customs and data rules. An executive from ePost Global noted that returns now represent a significant operational risk, with merchants immediately affected by regulatory shifts or carrier failures. The company's stated objective is to mitigate this volatility to maintain predictability in returns and delivery.

Reverse logistics is an escalating difficulty as international online shopping grows. Global return rates are climbing, while customs compliance demands and carrier reliability problems add complexity to moving goods back across borders. Industry analysis projects the worldwide reverse logistics market will approach a value of roughly $936 billion this year.

Estimates indicate that between 20% and 30% of online purchases are returned, a rate substantially higher than that of physical stores. In the United States, consumers sent back nearly $890 billion in merchandise in 2024, underscoring the operational weight on retailers and logistics providers. Many merchants are said to underestimate the regulatory obstacles, which include correctly classifying commodities and navigating restrictions on what items can re-enter the country.

Accurate documentation that matches original export records is also critical for U.S. returns. The process requires clean and precise export declarations to ensure consistency when goods are cross-referenced upon return.
