Entergy Data Center Deals to Save Customers $5 Billion Over 20 Years

According to a report from Construction Digital, US energy provider Entergy expects its agreements to power data centers will save its customers five billion dollars over a twenty-year period. The company, based in New Orleans, began its move into the data center sector two years ago with an initial agreement for two campuses in Mississippi.

Since that initial deal, the utility has secured agreements with five major technology firms to provide energy for data center campuses across Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The projected savings are calculated by comparing anticipated revenues from the data centers against the incremental costs required to serve them, which includes new power generation and transmission infrastructure.

Mississippi customers are forecast to see the largest portion of the savings, approximately two billion dollars. This is largely attributed to three campuses from one technology company and its role in helping offset costs associated with replacing two aging power plants. Arkansas follows with projected savings of up to 1.7 billion dollars linked to its agreements, one of which includes support for constructing a new solar and battery storage facility.

Louisiana customers are expected to see savings of 800 million dollars. One agreement in that state is projected to reduce storm recovery and grid resilience costs by ten percent for the utility's customers there.

Beyond the financial projections, Entergy and state regulators are advocating for stronger regulations for utility companies. They suggest that in some deregulated markets, customers have faced higher costs and concerns about reliable power availability. The proposed regulatory principles include requirements for long-term contracts, financial collateral, and grid reliability conditions.

Company leadership states these principles were developed in response to direction from state officials, with the primary goal of protecting and benefiting existing electricity customers. Whether these proposals gain wider industry adoption may be influenced by the evolving national discussion on how data centers secure their power.
