Diesel Price Spike Hits $5.00, Spot Rates Lag Behind

Diesel fuel prices have risen sharply over the past month, according to data from AAA. The national average price per gallon has increased from $3.65 to over $5.00 in approximately thirty days, marking a rapid price spike not seen in the trucking industry for years.

The price surge follows a disruption to oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Despite this significant increase in operating costs, spot market freight rates have shown little movement. Analysis from DAT Freight & Analytics indicates the national average spot linehaul van rate has remained largely static. Carriers are currently accepting all-in spot rates that were calculated based on the previous, lower diesel price, meaning they are paying substantially more for fuel than their rates account for.

Understanding Spot Rate Negotiations

In the spot freight market, brokers provide carriers with a single all-in rate that combines linehaul and fuel costs, unlike contract freight which itemizes a fuel surcharge. This rate is derived from the price the broker receives from a shipper, minus the broker's margin. Consequently, the fuel cost component within any quoted spot rate is a negotiable element, especially when underlying fuel prices change rapidly.

The current discrepancy means the fuel component embedded in most spot rates is based on outdated pricing. DAT's chief of analytics has stated that carriers without fuel hedging or contract pricing must negotiate higher spot rates to offset the increased pump prices to maintain financial viability.

Effective negotiation requires carriers to understand this rate structure and prepare with specific cost data before engaging with brokers. The dynamic places the onus on carriers to actively adjust the fuel portion of the spot rate during discussions to reflect current market conditions.
