Critical Metals Funds $30M to Accelerate Tanbreez Rare Earth Project in Greenland

Critical Metals has authorized a thirty-million-dollar program to accelerate the development of its Tanbreez heavy rare earth elements project in Greenland, according to Mining Technology. The initiative targets one of the world's largest known rare earth deposits, with initial ore output expected by late 2028 or early 2029 and concentrate shipments planned for the third quarter of 2029.

The company, active in critical minerals mining, cites rising global demand for rare earths from electrification, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing as a key driver. It aims to establish Tanbreez as a major supplier of heavy rare earths to Western markets. The approved funding will support work on exploration, infrastructure, engineering, and metallurgy needed to move the project toward development.

Specific components of the plan include a twelve-and-a-half-million-dollar exploration investment scheduled for 2026, involving up to six thousand meters of drilling. This work intends to expand the resource estimate from forty-five million tonnes to roughly one hundred thirty million tonnes and collect bulk samples for a pilot plant. Approximately fifteen million dollars is earmarked for infrastructure purchases in Greenland and Australia, alongside metallurgical testing and engineering programs with international consultants. These steps remain subject to approval from Greenland's government.

The 2026 field program is designed to enlarge the resource base and prepare for initial production. Planned activities involve extensive drilling at the Hill Zone deposit, exploration in the Upper Fjord area, resource upgrades, geotechnical drilling for port development, and further bulk sampling. This acceleration follows earlier exploration campaigns in 2024 and 2025 that reportedly delivered high-grade results.

Critical Metals is also engaged in talks with potential partners in the United States, Europe, and Saudi Arabia to create Western rare earth supply chains. In June 2025, the company obtained a letter of interest for one hundred twenty million dollars in project financing from the Export-Import Bank of the United States.
