Critical Maritime IoT Vulnerabilities Patched After 2025 Disclosure

Researchers from Singapore-based Rudra have identified a chain of critical security flaws in a widely used maritime IoT platform. According to a report from Splash247, the vulnerabilities in the SmartShipWeb platform could have allowed a remote attacker to gain complete control of a vessel's propulsion, navigation, power, and safety systems via a web browser.

The research detailed four vulnerabilities, beginning with common web application flaws such as a client-side password reset mechanism. Successful exploitation could lead to unrestricted access to a vessel's entire file system. From that position, researchers mapped thousands of operational system registers and directly controllable points, all without requiring authentication on operational technology protocols.

Technically feasible attack scenarios included spoofing navigation systems during port approaches, causing total loss of propulsion in busy shipping lanes, and overriding steering controls. The research team emphasized that the flaws were not exotic but became critical due to the system's architecture, creating a bridge from the internet to a ship's engine room.

The vulnerabilities were patched after a coordinated disclosure process facilitated by Singapore's Cyber Security Agency. The vendor was notified in June 2025, with patches applied in the final quarter of that year. No evidence of malicious exploitation was detected during the disclosure period.

These findings emerge during a period of heightened focus on maritime cybersecurity, following a reported significant increase in incidents last year. New international cyber resilience standards for ships contracted since mid-2024 are now enforceable. The researchers warned that regulatory compliance must be verified at a technical level, not just documented.
