Crane Price in U.S. Contacts 10% to $19K per Unit, Fluctuating Notably over 2022
U.S. Crane Import Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the crane price stood at $19K per unit (CIF, US), which is down by -9.9% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when the average import price increased by 62% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $35K per unit in January 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Germany ($58K per unit), while the price for Vietnam ($69 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (-0.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
U.S. Crane Imports
In August 2022, approximately 6.6K units of derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane were imported into the United States; reducing by -3% compared with July 2022 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 when imports increased by 373% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 11K units; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2022.
In value terms, crane imports reduced to $125M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +6.6% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports increased by +5.7% against June 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 with an increase of 32% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 143M units in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Crane Imports by Country
China (1.6K units), Finland (1.3K units) and Vietnam (1.2K units) were the main suppliers of crane imports to the United States, together accounting for 62% of total imports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of +138.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($34M) constituted the largest supplier of crane to the United States, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($13M), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 6.3% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Germany amounted to +10.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Finland (+45.9% per month) and Japan (-11.8% per month).
