Research from Simon-Kucher indicates that many American consumers are experiencing exhaustion due to persistent inflation and tariffs. The study found that only approximately one-third of participants reported understanding how tariffs affect pricing, yet a widespread perception remains that costs are rising for households.

According to a separate survey by the Kearney Institute, purchasing behavior is undergoing significant changes as individuals adjust their spending across different product types, quality levels, and retail methods. Specific adjustments include a majority reducing restaurant visits, a notable portion buying fewer clothing items, and many opting for less expensive brands or secondhand goods.

A partner from Simon-Kucher described a prolonged period of economic volatility for consumers, beginning with pandemic-related supply chain issues and continuing through tariff implementations and other global events influencing expenses like energy. The firm's analysis suggests that after years of financial pressure, shoppers are now fatigued by elevated prices, with even small increases adding to a cumulative sense of burden.

Monthly polling throughout 2025, starting in February, revealed that a large majority of consumers felt affected by inflation over the preceding three-year period. The survey also indicated that female respondents consistently reported feeling the impact of higher prices more strongly than male respondents.

Consumers noted more frequent price hikes as 2025 progressed, particularly for electronics, food, clothing, and household necessities. Current sentiment shows widespread concern about ongoing inflation, with many stating that prices now feel expensive. Research suggests consumer tolerance for price increases is limited, with purchasing decisions becoming more calculated beyond a certain threshold, leading to substitution, delayed buying, or abandonment of purchases.
