Construction Sector Shows Mixed Signals at Start of 2026

According to Construction Dive, early economic data for the construction industry indicates a loss of momentum at the beginning of the year. Key indicators softened in early March following a period of rapid expansion for large projects in the prior year.

Contractor backlog declined in January to its lowest point in four years. Planning activity also fell significantly. While the total count of project starts rose, this increase was driven by a small number of power and utility developments. Start activity in commercial and institutional building segments revealed signs of an emerging slowdown.

Despite these trends, contractor confidence remains high. This optimism may be linked to primary industry drivers that continue to show expansion. Construction related to data centers is a dominant force in the project pipeline. Energy and infrastructure work are also supporting nonresidential building activity.

Broader measures suggest the current environment is more favorable compared to the same period last year. Although project stress increased slightly in January because of more delays, the overall index remains substantially lower than a year ago, largely due to fewer abandoned projects.

The sector faces ongoing challenges from tariffs, however. Input costs rose again in January, with notable price increases for materials including copper, cable, iron, and steel. Analysts monitoring trade policy caution that these elevated costs may continue throughout the year.
