Construction Backlog Rebounds to 8.1 Months in February

Industry backlog increased slightly in February, according to an analysis by Associated Builders and Contractors. The figure rose to 8.1 months, recovering from a four-year low recorded in the prior month.

The aggregate increase, however, masks a significant disparity among different types of contractors. Firms with annual revenues exceeding $100 million reported a backlog of 12.1 months. Furthermore, contractors holding data center construction contracts had 11.2 months of work, while those without such projects had only 7.6 months. Compared to the same period one year ago, the industrywide backlog figure declined by 0.2 months.

Regional performance was also uneven. The Middle States region experienced the most substantial growth, adding a full month of backlog from January to February. It was also the only region to show a year-over-year improvement, with an increase of 1.2 months.

Across market sectors, commercial and institutional construction alongside heavy industrial segments saw their backlogs grow month-over-month. In contrast, the infrastructure segment declined, falling back to 8.9 months after a stronger showing in January.

Despite these mixed results, contractor sentiment measured by the Construction Confidence Index remained positive. Expectations for both sales and staffing levels over the next six months increased in February. The CCI series for staffing level expectations rose to the highest level since March 2025. The outlook for profit margin expansion, while still indicating anticipated growth, was slightly lower than the previous month's reading.

Analysts note that recent geopolitical tensions could elevate material prices and borrowing costs, potentially suppressing demand for certain construction types outside the data center sector. Such rising input costs may also affect future confidence in hiring and profitability.
